Heather Smith, RN BSN, CWCA
Heather is a health content writer with a background in nursing. She is passionate about helping people learn about their bodies and ways to improve their health. She also understands that medical topics are complex and often difficult to understand. Heather realized that she could reach many more people through writing than teaching one patient at a time. In 2021, Heather started writing health articles to provide up-to-date, accurate information written in a way anyone can understand.
Education:
Heather graduated with her nursing degree in 2014 from Golden West College in Huntington Beach, California. She then went on to get her bachelor's degree in science from Grand Canyon University.
In 2023, Heather got her emergency medical responder’s license.
Expertise and professional focus:
Heather has worked as a nurse in a variety of healthcare settings. She started working in a medical-surgical unit at a hospital in Southern California. After five years, she transitioned into home health and loved the more personalized care she got to give her patients. After two years, Heather started working as a wound care nurse for a private practice physician. Most recently, Heather has returned to the hospital setting and is working on a teaching unit that oversees senior-level nursing students for their final clinical round.
In 2021, Heather heard of nurse medical writers. The idea intrigued her, and in 2022, she founded her own LLC, Nurse and Quill, and started writing. Along with working with Wellnesspulse, Heather’s writing is featured on sites such as Medical News, Healthgrades, Nourish, and Bari Life. Heather has also ghostwritten many articles and a book about nurses transitioning into other fields.
Personal interests:
When not writing or working in the hospital, Heather homeschools her three kids and works on the family farm she and her husband are building. They currently sell pasture-raised pork and free-range eggs from their farm. Heather and her husband also volunteer for their local rural fire department. They love pouring into their community in such a tangible way.
Stance on current health issues:
Heather believes one of the pressing issues in today’s healthcare is a lack of quality health education. Many people are struggling with preventable illnesses but lack an understanding of how their daily food and activity choices affect their overall health. Heather hopes that in her little corner of the writing world, she can give helpful information on how to maintain health throughout the years.
